About the bridge

A crossing has carried the Dixie Highway over the St. Lucie River at Stuart since 1918, when a swing bridge named for Henry Flagler first spanned the water. In 1934 a bascule drawbridge, funded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, opened in its place and took the Roosevelt name. The bridge standing today was built alongside it in 1964. When the high-level fixed Roosevelt Bridge opened in 1996, U.S. 1 was rerouted onto the new span, the 1934 bascule was demolished — a small abandoned stub still stands on the north bank — and the 1964 drawbridge was kept for local traffic on County Road 707. It is owned by the Florida Department of Transportation.
