About the bridge

The Snake Creek Bridge carries the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1) over Snake Creek near mile marker 86, connecting Plantation Key and Windley Key. Completed in 1981, it is the fourth bridge at this site and the first to be a drawbridge — every earlier crossing was a low-level fixed span — and its single-leaf steel bascule was added to open an additional navigable channel between the keys. It is the only operating drawbridge remaining in the Florida Keys, a distinction it has held since 2008. The Florida Department of Transportation, which owns the bridge, has studied replacing it with a high-level fixed span, completing a feasibility study in 2019.
