About the bridge

The Brickell Avenue Bridge carries U.S. Route 1 across the mouth of the Miami River, linking downtown Miami with the Brickell district. The first bridge here opened in 1929; the current double-leaf bascule replaced it in 1995 and was widened in 2006 to add a northbound lane through the perennial downtown bottleneck. It is among the busiest and most-opened drawbridges in Florida — the Florida Department of Transportation recorded 4,990 openings in 2010 alone. The bridge also serves as a public monument. Commissioned by FDOT and completed in 1995 by Cuban-American sculptor Manuel Carbonell, 'The Pillar of History and the Tequesta Family' rises mid-span: a 53-foot bronze work whose 36-foot carved column narrates the lives of the Tequesta, Miami's first inhabitants, in 158 figures, topped by a 17-foot 'Tequesta Family' of a warrior aiming an arrow skyward beside his wife and child. Four bronze bas-reliefs on the piers honor Miami pioneers William and Mary Brickell, Henry Flagler, Julia Tuttle, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The crossing was recognized by the Federal Highway Administration for excellence in highway design.
