About the bridge

The SW 2nd Avenue Bridge stands at the most historic crossing point on the Miami River. The first bridge ever built over the river opened here in 1896 — originally the Avenue G Bridge — and gave Henry Flagler's railroad its crossing into the young city of Miami. That first structure relied on a turning basin rather than a modern draw. A second bridge, opening on April 9, 1924, was the first at the site to lift like the drawbridges seen today. The current bascule span, the third at this location, has carried traffic since 2003.
