About the bridge

The current SW 1st Street Bridge opened to traffic in October 2021, replacing a 13-span crossing built in 1929 that had served as a gateway into downtown Miami for more than ninety years. The older bridge was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places but had reached the end of its service life. Its double-leaf bascule replacement was engineered around a widened 125-foot navigation channel to ease vessel passage on the lower Miami River, and the project earned a 2022 Engineering Excellence Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida. The bridge carries State Road 968 and is maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation.
