About the bridge

The NW 12th Avenue Bridge is a bascule crossing rebuilt in the late 2000s and recognized with the Florida Transportation Builders' Association Major Bridge Award in 2009. Because the Miami River could be closed to navigation for only a 72-hour window, its engineers pre-assembled the heavy bascule 'toe' sections downriver, barged them in, and hoisted them into place within that window — an unusual feat of movable-bridge construction. The bridge was built by Kiewit Southern Company to a design by EC Driver & Associates and is owned by the Florida Department of Transportation.
