About the bridge

The NW 5th Street Bridge opened to traffic on April 1, 2010, replacing a bascule that had stood since 1925. The original was one of six movable Miami River bridges designed around that year by Howard, Harrington & Ash, a predecessor of the engineering firm HNTB. By the end of its life the old bridge had become a hazard to navigation — its leaves did not fully clear the channel, and it was struck by vessels seventeen times over its final thirty-five years. Two collisions in the summer of 2005 left it locked in the open position and hastened its replacement. The current double-leaf bascule carries State Road 7 and is owned by the Florida Department of Transportation.
